Title: I'm pregnant! (but take beta blockers??)
Post by billycat on Sep 23rd, 2007, 3:30am

I can't quite believe I'm writing this - but I am actually pregnant! Only just - but its definatley true!

I've only known for a couple of days and although we've been trying for over three years - I'm in a state of being beside myself with excitement, and then the next minute I'm feeling overcome with anxiety, especially health anxiety. I'm hoping this will subside as the weeks go on??

RLR - I take propanolol 40mg x four per day. I've had a look at the leaflet with the tablets and it doesn't say anything about if you become pregnant. Should I try and stop taking them??

I'm seeing my cardiologist on Thursday of this week luckily - but I wouldn't want to be doing any harm to my baby even before then...

Thankyou,

Wow-fantastic news-congratulations!!
It took us quite a long time to conceive as well & although I was over the moon I also felt very apprehensive & nervous as I suffer from health anxiety. There was definitely a feeling of 'oh no! What have I done?!' as well as being really excited-I think that's normal.
The best way to cope with it is just to take the pregnancy one day at a time.
Sorry, can't help with the BB stuff, obviously RLR should be able to advise you but if you want to talk to someone asap then ring your local pharmacy & speak to the pharmacist as they are usually pretty helpful in these situations.
Good luck with the baby & start getting used to everyone around you suddenly turning into pregnancy & baby experts!! Take on board the stuff you feel comfortable with, listen to the medical staff & ignore the rest otherwise you'll just end up confused! See? I'm giving you advice already!!!!
Let us know how you get on.
love Seffe

Well, how about that!!  Congratulations!  I sometimes have the regret that I had not chosen obstectrics because the excitement associated with expectant moms is a great thing to see.

The use of beta blockers during pregnancy can have several effects on the fetus, including slowed heart rate, lowered blood pressure and even lowered blood sugar. Naturally, always advise your specialist if you're taking these medications. I wouldn't worry about the need to reduce or even terminate use of these drugs temporarily and alternatives may be available depending upon medical history, etc.

Again, congratulations and best wishes in the forthcoming newest member to your family.

Best regards and Good Health

Thank you so much for your good wishes everyone.

(Isn't life curious, 'funny' and sometimes so cruel... whilst one life is tragically taken from someone somewhere in the world - another is being formed somewhere else. Whilst  being thankful, humble and overwhelmed about the life being created in me right now, I cannot help thinking of the pain that Angie is going through right at this same moment. Thank goodness for sites like this in which fantastic folk offer support and friendship to people experiencing all that life throws at them!!)

I will update on what the cardiologist says later in the week.
