Title: PVC's
Post by kchendrix on Jan 14th, 2008, 9:33am

Hi:

quick question.....  The last couple of days and nights I have had a lot more PVCs  .....   I have a chest cold going on,,,  could this in and of itself be causing a little more PVC then usual?

Hello there
I have noticed the same myself. Twice before Christmas I got a fluey cold that had me laid up and my ectopics got worse than I ever had since I had them - I was getting about 15 per minute no let-up for a week, then it started to go back to my usual of about 4-6 per minute (ie still horrid but what I am more familiar with). My GP did an ecg on the spot and told me it was okay - just lots of ectopics and maybe when I got run down I would get more. The same thing happened about a month later when I got another cold that turned a bit chesty.

Maybe this is how it goes for some of us. I don't understand why though as getting a cold or flu or other virus seems unrelated to heart palpitations to me!

In some ways I am pleased to hear this is your experience because it doesn't make me feel so weird or as if I have brought it on in some way myself (which I was sure I had not).

Hope you feel better soon though

Indeed, palpitation frequency can increase during exposure to viral or bacterial invasion such as that associated with a cold or flu. The reason has to do with the body's response to the infection, which causes dysregulation of the hypothalmus in the brain that affects body temperature and some autonomic processes like your heart rate.

Under such conditions, the heart rate typically increases and the potential for you to experience a corresponding increase in palpitations is normal.

You'll be fine.

Best regards and Good Health

wow - that is really interesting.
I have heard of the hypothalamus role in regulating body functions before when I was doing yoga. There was one position which my yoga teacher told me helped to promote a healthy hypothalamus and I used to feel very calm in the position despite it not looking like a position you would feel calm in - ie. lying on your back with your legs straight and resting behind your shoulders on a stool. Or if you're really flexible - on the floor!
So well, while some yoga worked for me, some positions really provoked heart palpitations so I have given it up for now. But I am very interested in the fact that colds and viruses can affect that part of the brain that controls your heart beats.
Thanks rlr!

I have experienced similar feelings during a recent virus of achy limbs and joints and feeling so tired and the ectopics increased.
Have to say whenever I feel off colour they tend to.

I have also noticed an increase in ectopic & / or faster palpitations when I have had a bad cold. Especially if I had a raised temperature.
I do know that the hypothalamus is kind of like a master controller of the body & works to keep it in balance-homeostasis I think, RLR correct me if I'm wrong!
When my little boy was 10 months old he developed a condition called bronchiolitis & his heart was going so fast that the doctor couldn't count the beats. He was admitted into hospital & they dunked his head in a bucket of cold water (traumatic for both of us!) & his heart reverted to sinus rhythm immediately. I think this procedure is something to do with the vagus nerve. Just an example of how colds etc can affect your heart!
Hope you're feeling better!

thanks for your response.  I  appreciate it...  Knowledge certainly helps lessen fear and anxiety.      In a couple of weeks I go for my annual cardiac work up that my doc does...   holter monitor, stress test and echo...       I believe my doctor does a lot of this every year to reassure me.....

Thanks again for your support and help
