Post by emma09 on Dec 23rd, 2010, 7:06am

ive had flu for the past 3 days cough headache now earache today after lots of sleep fluids etc etc im feeling much better just left with a cough and this ear ache! ive noticed tho that i havent had any palps at all until today ?! my heart rate has been higher over the past couple of days i put this down to the flu, but today my palps are back when my heart rate has dropped : / so when i am ill i dont have palps but as soon as im better there back again ???? why is this ?? i thought it would of been the other way round ??

It's the same way for me, I always get nasty palps after being sick or when I'm on the end. But when I feel like complete crap, I'm palp free LOL

I never get palps, really, anymore.... unless I'm sick! It's so annoying. I usually get them the first day or 2 of the illness then they go away. I wonder why that is.

They're very annoying, but remember - completely harmless. I had 350 of them on my 24 hour test. But... well, you know, it's just a nerve impulse coming in at an inappropriate point. Nothing that can hurt you.

This is an extremely common complaint and the reason is that during illness, sympathetic nervous system drives become continuously dominant, ie more rapid heart rate along with other aspects of sympathetic influence that work to fight off infection.

Heart palpitations are a consequence of parasympathetic nervous activity and are therefore blunted during the period that sympathetic drives are dominant. Once infection and/or illness has been overcome and no longer considered a threat to the body, parasympathetic drives gradually resume their shared role with the sympathetic nervous system. Thus, the proclivity for palpitation events is once again increased in the susceptible individual.

Okay, I'm not certain what you're suggesting to be pathological about benign palpitations that appear with some consistency within the cardiac cycle, but there is absolutely no indication that your symptoms would suggest your fears to be warranted.

I've looked back over the entirety of your threads and your symptoms are entirely consistent with benign palpitations due to stress/anxiety.

Simply because the characterization of the palpitations changes does not indicate in any way that some type of transformation has taken place. I have mentioned this repeatedly throughout the forum and you should pause long enough to read my comments in this regard.

Best regards and Good Health

Hi Emma, i get the same thing also, when I am ill with flu i dont get palpitations or ectopic beats but as soon as I am well again they are back. I had these extra beats, pvc , palpitations for the last 30 years.
Dont worry. :)

Surprising that they are consequence of parasympathetic activity, since - from what I've read and understood - parasympathetic activity slows things down?? Or do you mean "lack of" og "inhibition of" parasympathetic activity?
