This may be just a coincidence, but it seems that a lot of the time when I get a "palp" or a catch in my chest that takes my breath away I also feel like I can't get air in thru my nose.

I'm really not sure about these catches. I think RLR explained it, but I can't remember. So, repeating for new readers. This feels like I stop breathing for a second or three... like my heart stops. Sometimes I have the real, fluttering, tapping palpitations and other times it's just this... catch.

Can anyone explain this or comment on the nasal thing?

The sensation is merely subjective and does not actually preclude inhalation from occurring through the nasal turbines or otherwise.

Remember that the vagus nerve innervates the lungs among other terminal points and that the wayward evoked potential or nerve impulse which causes the heart muscle to react and characterized as a palpitation events, also causes a disturbance in tidal respiration characteristics of the lungs in much the same way. Patients sometimes complain that they feel the need to briefly impart voluntary control over respiration due to the fact that it feels as though the lungs might not perform autonomically as is normally experienced. The sensation is entirely subjective, but it does impart the same apprehension in some patients in very similar manner to those who feel the same concern regarding the automaticity of the heart, with the exception that voluntary control in such an instance is not possible.

Nothing to be concerned about here.
