Title: Atenolol Post by beadbabe on Feb 12th, 2007, 10:29am My GP is now prescribing this. But doesn't this drug cause diabetes? I don't want to go on it and then find it was another health problem to add to the list. Does anyone take this successfully? |
Title: Re: Atenolol Post by RLR on Feb 12th, 2007, 2:59pm Okay, we have to take great care when reading medical jargon regarding prescriptions and relative side-effects, etc. Atenolol can "mask" the early warning symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), and should be used with caution in patients receiving treatment for diabetes. In other words, it does not cause diabetes whatsoever. In persons with diabetes, it can mask signs of hypoglycemia and subsequently, patients may not be concerned or react when in fact, they need to respond before problems arise. Atenolol is fine and even in low doses, not only provides regulation of heart rate but also adds mild anxiolytic effects as well. It's a good choice. Best regards and Good Health |
