Title: Concerned again....
Post by Seabass17 on May 5th, 2013, 8:14pm

Hi there:

Up until about 4 days ago, I was getting palpitations maybe once or twice a day. Usually just a single thump or flutter in my chest, usually late at night when I was really bloated. Since then, I have been getting almost 10 a minute all day. A couple of questions:

1. I remember last year around this time last year I had the same issue. I am wondering if you can get these sensations from seasonal allergies. I have horrible allergies, could this be a new symptom of those?

2. The palpitations I have experienced lately (and early last year) feel a bit different than I am used to. It feels like a slow double beat. If I feel my pulse, there is a pause while I get this slow double beat (almost like one full heartbeat). I can feel it in my chest, but not in my pulse. My pulse just feels like a 2-3 second pause. Does anyone else experience this?

A little history, I am a 40 year old male. Recently had my gallbladder taken out, and I am still having a lot of stomach issues. Lots of bloating and gas. I have had several EKGs, a 2 week event monitor, an echo and lots of blood tests. All is good. I thought I had gotten rid of the worst of these things, and they are back again.

Its taken a lot of courage not to drive myself over to ER on several occasions tonight. I know that wont accomplish anything though, and I would be wasting everyone's time.

Hi Seabass17,

Although I have no experience in the field, I do have plenty of experience with cardiac anxiety, and felt I would offer reassurance until someone with medical knowledge can answer you in full.

Palpitations in varying quantities and time-scales are experienced by many anxious people. You have described a premature heartbeat well, also, by the feeling that you have an early beat, and then a missed one. This is a typical experience, one that I share.

If you have received no concern from any medical professionals, then the palpitations are benign and should not be cause for further concern. You have been well checked, to say the least. There's probably enough information collected from you to build a functional model of your heart!

I find that diet, emotion, routine, body position and sleep all play a role in my palpitations and heart rate. The typical scenario that brings up 'clusters' of palpitations, where I will 'skip beats' around 10 times a minute also, is when I have remained stationary for a long while, and then eat a meal.

To ease the palpitations, sleeping well, eating regularly and remaining active and non-stationary are all important factors. Exercise is also a wonderful anti-depressant and although palpitations may occur in an anxious individual during any exercise, it often instills a sense of calm throughout the day.

To Seabass17....you mention you have severe allergies.  I find that cold medications and allergy medications give me crazy  palpitations.  If you are taking medications for your allergy, that could possibly be the problem.
