gastrointitus

Hi

Well been feeling awful had diarriahea, then bad cramping pain in my upper stomach, went to the out of hours doctor and he said I had gastrointitus (sorry have no idea how to spell it) gave me mebeverine to stop the spasms which they did but I'm now gettin palpitations and I can really feel my heart when I breath in.  It's frightening me a bit.  The pain has subsided quite a bit at the moment and I've been drinking lots of water and had a couple of plain biscuits.

Is it normal to get the palpitations?  Undecided

Thanks

The term is gastroenteritis and is an inflammation of the stomach lining and intestinal lining in some cases, can be quite disruptive and even painful. With proper treatment, even with simple rest and restricted diet for several days, symptoms resolve successfully. In patients pre-disposed to IBS, the symptoms can oftentimes be quite excacerbated or dramatic.

It is without doubt, common for palpitations to occur in the presence of this sort of inflammation, mostly because the GI tract disturbances represent the main stimulus that causes benign palpitations.

You'll be fine. Get rest, eat light and don't overdo the liquids. You'll need to be careful of electrolyte loss if the diarrhea persists, but be very careful when using replacement products that have a high sugar content, which only serves to increase diarrhea symptoms.

Just got back from the out of hours doctor again, been taking the mebeverine but got cramping pains again at about 8pm took mebeverine at 9 and now it's 2am and my stomach is still bad, it's been so intense I haven't known what to do with myself, doctor said tummy is soft and it's not appendix (which I've already had out) or gall bladder, just IBS and gave me codine for the pain.

Is this normal should I be worried I just want the pain to go? please help!!

Thanks for your reply earlier

As I've said before, the heart races because it adjusts for changes in blood pressure and a response to activity. Codeine will also create such symptoms, as well as aggrevate constipation, so I advise caution with its use for IBS-C.

I certaintly can't examine you, but I'm concerned that the antispasmodics will have a rebound effect. You are constipation-predominant and these sorts of drugs will definitely complicate matters in that regard. Once again, I must redirect you to speaking with your doctor about the use of Zelnorm. The pain in your upper right back, depending upon its exact location, can be either splenic flexure syndrome cause by gas in the intestines, or if higher under the scapula is likely musculoskeletal. The gall bladder can refer pain to this area on occasion, but without diagnostic tests, I can't tell you if that's your problem.

There are other alternatives for pain relief from IBS and codeine would not be my first choice in your case, since you have constipation.

Thank you

Went and saw my doctors today and he told me to stop taking the codine too, I feel quite light headed at the moment but only had mebeverine about 8 hours ago.

The doctor gave me Ranitedene to stop the acid and Amitriptyline he said this is good for constipation dominant IBS too, and said it will help a little with my anxiety I'm only to take 10mg once a day at night.

Is this correct I did say about the one you recommended and said I'd spoken to another doctor about it, but he said he thought this one would be a better option. What to you think?

Also sending me for more blood tests, checking electrolytes, Thyroid, liver, something else, aneamia and FBC

Thank you for replying tummy feeling ok just I'm now feeling spaced out, haven't eaten loads though only little bits and water.

Hi

Went upstairs and sat down and my heart slowed down, but all today it's felt not poundy but weird, but has been normal a little fast but whenever I stand from sitting it goes fast and poundy and when I sit it feels poundy and echoey for a moment. my chest is also a little achey and I'm feeling uncontrollerbly anxious, trying really hard to get rid of the your going to end up in hospital thoughts.

Is it normal to feel like this after gastrenteritis? Just a little reassurance please?  Smiley

Thank you

Hi Kathryn,

Just found out about the new forum. I had gastroenteritis once myself. It is pretty uncomfortable. Right now I have excessive gas, and I have been noticing the palps again. I was palp free for a couple of months, but I also notice they seem to come back when I am feeling more stressed than usual. I believe RLR when he says they are caused by the excess gas. Sometimes I can even feel the gas rise up before I even feel the palp. The feeling is not nice, but I try not to get so scared. The fast heartbeat will slow down when you relax and let it happen. You already had some tests done on your heart right?

Hi Mia

Great to hear from you again, had to move because of all the porn posts!

Yeah I've had Echo, 24 hour ECG and loads of ECGs and blood tests for everything and just had some more done.

Logic is trying to tell me it's because I've had a bad stomach for the past few days, but when it gets so bad where it races when I stand and then takes a minute to get back to normal when I sit it just frightens me, I've been burping all the time though.  I'm dishing out advice all over the place and not actually taking it myself.  I suppose I've worried myself that the gastroenteritis has done damage of some sort.   Also this time last year tomorrow I was in hospital for having loads of missed beats and a fastish heart rate.

I was doing so well just like you, and as soon as I started to wind down and I got my period bam I feel bad, it's been 3 weeks of acid and IBS and now Gastroenteritis so hoping it all calms down and Hoping I can get a bit more positive.

Thanks for posting it's great to hear from you, just think how you were doing the other day.  How are you?

Hi

Well the getting better slowly, had a bad tummy this morning and cramps in my lower belly, and felt really sick, but eased as day went on.

Been getting palpitations (pounding heart) on and off, and I've been getting twinges in my chest centre and ache in between my shoulder blades too, is this ok? as it's starting to worry me a little.  Huh

Also at night I'm still getting the shaking/trembling feeling.

Good news though got my 1st Anxiety Management class on Thursday so hoping my tummy settles before then.

Hope you are all ok
