More vagus nerve
Sep 01st, 2008, 11:24pm

Hi there

I've spent another night jerking awake everytime I go to drop off. The feeling that happens is very horrible - like a strong electric shock into my head and mouth and right down my arms and I keep tingling for a long time afterwards.

Could something in my stomach be trapping my vagus nerve? I've got a lot of muscle tension in the area above my belly button due to bad posture. Was wondering if a stomach massage might help the problem. I'm beginning to think I'll never sleep again.

I'm starting to get a bit freaked out by this now (and very tired).

Best wishes

Sue

Nothing to be concerned about here. I understand your discomfort, but what you are experiencing is a physiological phenomenon known as hypnogogia. It typically occurs in persons who have either intentionally deprived themselves of sleep for periods greater than 24 hours, or in the case of persons suffering from insomina.

Hypnic jerks are technically classified as myoclonic twitches and arise from a response by the brain that misinterprets the physical sense of relaxation toward sleep as inappropriate. The affected person often feels jolted by the experience and can even sense less intense approximations of the reaction by moving their eyes horizontally from extreme left to right or vice versa, sensing a sort of pulsing or electrical impulse in the head, neck and even chest area in some cases. The sensation under these pretenses is usually extinguished after several movements of the eyes back and forth. A brief pause for several minutes will usually permit reoccurence.

Hypnogogia is not a sign that anything is wrong other than the body is deprived of sleep. Once you able to establish quasi-normal sleep patterns, the symptoms will abate.

You'll be fine.

Best regards and Good Health
