Exercise / anxiety / palpitations
Sep 02nd, 2008, 3:51am

Hi rlr
I wondered if it is possible for you to explain why exercise helps anxiety? Also, if palpitations reduce during exercise, or for some people, reduce generally in your life as a result of doing exercise, why is that?

Thanks - I have been wondering. Is it the reduction in anxiety or is it the exercise?

Hi Beadbabe..

Just my personal opinion, but I think the reason pvc's improve with exercise is that exercise provides an anxiety reliever.  It maks you feel more whole inside, rather than sitting down on the couch worrying.  It's also a form of distraction and distraction helps in relieving anxiety and pvc's.

I think overall, exercise provides a reduction in anxiety.  Hmmm, I need to start exercising more!   Wink

Okay, realize that anxiety is representative of stress that is being generated. The body responds to this stress in the form of physiological manifestations. Under exertion, the energy is alternatively expended or discharged. This is the reason that muscular tension often prevails in cases where persons under stress are also sedentary both at work and at home for the most part.

The human body must perfom physical activity of a nature sufficient enough to counteract the effects of stress. It's not that exercise can relieve anxiety, but rather diminishes its ability to affect the body from a physical standpoint. One of the ways this occurs is through increasing vagal tone. This can either cause palpitations to appear in some persons or alternatively, they can appear once the body comes under the influence of parasympathetic nervous responses following exertion or exercise. Regardless of the appearance of certain symptoms, the body responds very well to regular exercise, both from a physical and cognitive standpoint.

Best regards and Good Health

Hi there
Thanks for the reply - I was wondering how it worked.
You know this vagal tone thing - I understand the great big nerve that runs through our body, but as its state is referred to as 'tone' - can it be changed through exercise. I don't think change is the right word, but can it help the nerve to behave in a more 'normal' way. ie. a bit less overactive or underactive, as it seems to be this case. Sorry can't really find good words to explain what I am wondering.
