Question for Kalah
May 11th, 2010, 11:06am

Hi Kalah,
Thank you for the reply to my post yesterday. It helped me a lot. My question is, you mentioned exercising through the skips. Did you have bigeminy and trigeminy during exercise? I get bigeminy really bad during exercise, to the point where I give up and stop. I get somewhat short of breath with bigeminy and it makes my chest feel so weird. When I've had it during stress tests, they always tell me to keep going, so I figure it isn't dangerous, just uncomfortable and it makes me feel nervous. I'd just like to hear more about your experiences with it, since we seem to have similar palpitations. Do you still get it when you exercise now? Or has exercise cured the bigeminy?

Yes, when I was having a bad time with the ectopics last year, and first started the walks, I would get bigeminy/trigeminy at the beginning of the walk. But I took it slow, just walking rather than trying to jog or run because if I had skips AND did something that naturally made me short of breath, the combination of sensations was really unpleasant even if it wasn't dangerous. After I got to where walking cut the palps down, I tried jogging a bit. That made the bigeminy come back and combined with being winded from jogging I had to stop... I think if I'd kept pushing at that time I probably would have hit another 'second wind' but at the time I didn't feel like I needed to try.

Back then other kinds of strenuous exercise, like hoeing in the garden would also bring the bigeminy back, but I would ignore most of it and just take short breaks if I felt I had to. Eventually it tapered off and now I can do the things I couldn't do before, like shove the heavy push mower around in 90 degree weather without any incident (other than nearly giving myself heat exhaustion =P) And now I can jog at least as well as I used to before, but it's not really my thing. Wink

As for whether the exercise cured me? I attribute the proving to myself that it wouldn't kill me, and side effect of regular exercise helping to lower my general stress levels more than just the exercise itself, but either way I do think it definitely helped!

It is sometimes a case of facing up your fears as far as exercise is concerned. I used to be extremely active, mainly weight training and cycling. However since I started having really bad palpitations again I have become wary about doing any activity that raises my heart rate. This is fairly illogical considering that I don't usually get ectopics when my heart is beating fast, although I quite often get them in the 'cool down' phase afterwards.
In fact when I think about it my worst runs of missed beats and flutters have come when I have been sat down, laid in bed or doing something not particularly strenuous. Perhaps then I should be more worried about relaxing than exercising! I know it would make much more sense not to be fearful of palpitations at all but that is easier said than done sometimes.

Thank you both for the replies. It is funny because I have been working very hard at taking steps to get past my fears of palpitations, and the past few days I've had worse palps than ever. I had a baby 4 months ago, and I think my hormones are still trying to normalize, so the palps have been worse. I just want to get to a point where I hardly think about my heart at all, and if I do continue to have palps, that I barely notice them. Thank you, Kalah, for inspiring me to get out there and walk again. I think that the stress relief it would provide me would be helpful.
