Happy New Year!
Jan 13th, 2011, 11:44am

Hi guys,

Just thought I'd pop by to wish everyone a very happy and palp free New Year because I haven't been around for some time.  Was going to pop in and wish everyone a Merry Christmas but unfortunately my wife was taken into hospital with Pneumonia and is only just starting to recover from it now so as you can imagine it's been a bit traumatic just lately.

After my last post in August where I was surprised that the runs of ectopics had gone I then developed a very infected ingrowing toenail which has only just healed after at least 5 seperate and very painful infections!!  I had to stop my fitness training regime for nearly 3 months but then entered a treadmill challenge in December to raise money for charity and came 9th overall!

The thing is that since that day back in August last year I still have not had the weird runs of ectopics or strange rythmn that was bugging me so much every day.  I have had the very occasional single ectopic but nothing else and in fact I have totally forgotten about them.  During the event that we raised money for charity I cycled, ran on a running machine and rowed for 9 minutes for each one and covered nearly 12km in total!  The best fitness I've ever acheived!

Even with all the trauma at Christmas with my wife I still did not suffer any palpatations!  But also my wife notice that HER heart was doing something really weird about a week before she got really sick.  It was doing very similar to what mine used to do but constantly for a few hours!  This happened quite a few times and in fact in hospital they had to do an ecg and were quite concerned that her heart was beating so fast but not only that it was totally irregular with ectopics all over the place!

She was discharged eventually when her temperature and heartrate had eventually come down.  Her resting heartrate had been at 120! But since she's been home she hasn't had a single palpatation.

So it just goes to show that these palps will come out of the blue especially when you are ill or anxious or for unknown reasons but they can easily just dissapear for months or even years without any reason either!  I'm still basking in the palp free time at the moment and hope that I never have them ever again.  But I really do agree with RLR in that these things are totally harmless and that you should never stop doing anything or going anywhere because of them.

Also I think that cardiovascular fitness training is very important and makes you feel so much better.  For me jogging, boxercise, cycling and weights has improved my overall fitness pushed me to the limits and ultimately made me realise that if I can push myself to such extremes with my heart beating up in the 160's + then surely there cannot be anything wrong with it!  Also the improved cardio fitness gives you such a feeling of wellbeing, a very low resting heartrate and actually helps to rid you of palps!

Happy New Year and I hope that you all find ways to manage those uncomfortable feelings and also hope that one day they will vanish just as they came!

All the best

Rich

Well Hi Richard. Good to hear from you and I hope your holidays were joyous.

It's also good news that your symptoms have subsided to such a great extent and that your wife is recovering.

Best regards,

Rutheford Rane, MD (ret.)
