Please help! Limbs going numb during the night!
Dec 08th, 2011, 4:33pm

Hey guys..

I hoping someone in here can let me know if they ever experience the same issue that is really making me lose sleep at the moment....

My whole life it hasn't been unusual to wake through the night on occassions with pins and needles in either my hand, arm, foot or leg, it had never concerned me as i thought is was just normal. However, lately, this occurrance has increased in frequency to the point that i cant sleep with my arms above my head or under my body or sleep on my left side without this happening!! The worst one is when i roll onto my left side i am woken with my leg asleep every night now!
As far as anxiety and stress, i have actually been really calm and positive this past couple of weeks and i have even started doing yoga and exercises to try to improve my circulation but so far none of these factors have helped at all  Embarrassed

Please, please RLR, could you explain why this is happening? I have started thinking the worst and am becoming nervous when night falls and i know i have to go to bed!! Can the numbness cause a clot??? Do you think it could be related to my eye Migraines?? I also have cold hands and feet most of the time and notice that if i sit or stand for a while my feet turn a darker colour.....I would really appreciate some help as all i really have is my gp who isn't as thorough as a neurologist and i really dont want to jump ahead and ask for a refferal already when i have just been there about the migraines!

Thankyou so much for reading and helping  Smiley

Kelley.

Okay, paraesthesia of this type has nothing to do with circulation and is more a result of poor sleep architecture as a consequence of stress and tension. Realize that mild nerve compression can easily result from sleeping positions that are contrary to states of actual relaxation. The condition would also be inconsistent with a deep vein thrombus.

Paraesthesia is extremely common and self-limited in its effects that are temporarily discomforting and impose no health risk whatsoever. It's important to stretch your muscles at some point and engage in activities and exercise that can reduce musculoskeletal tension. Additionally, do not lie down to sleep until you are tired and avoid taking issues to the mattress with you. Make certain that your bedding is comfortable and undertake relaxing activities at night before bedtime, do not eat any sooner than 2 hours before lying down and take note of any body tension that may be present and simply brought on by the stressors of anxiety, etc. Take a relaxing bath or shower, clear you head of worrisome habits and grant yourself the opportunity to gain a decent night's sleep.

True lack of circulation is extremely painful and warrants prompt intervention of a nature that cannot be avoided by any efforts. You are misinterpreting your difficulty as a sign of a more serious problem and nothing could be further from the truth. Learning to recognize and overcome tension and aiming for restful sleep will go a long way to a reduction in present symptoms and difficulty. The nature of tension can be easily overlooked and its effects far more obvious and troubling than the precipitating nature of the tension itself. Being less overtly anxious really has no bearing on the somatic features of anxiety, which are in many instances supplant the more recognizable and characteristic features of generalized anxiety from a cognitive standpoint.

You're going to be just fine and you're at no risk of the circumstances you perceive to be the problem.

Best regards,
