People going into AF
Dec 12th, 2011, 10:38am

Hi RLR, this is not my first post, I have lost all my details to log into my old one. I am in a group on facebook which is for all sufferers of palps (I help somewhat to reassure them) and am reading far too many posts on people with benign palps suddenly going into AF and being taken to hospital to correct it. Now im not 100% sure but didnt you say before that its impossible to go into AF with benign palps? I cured my heart phobia a year ago and have been doing fantastic, getting maybe one skipped beat a week! Now, since being in that group and reading what they are saying my phobia is creeping back and so are the palps.

Vagus nerve-induced palpitations are entirely incapable of transforming into, or causing ventricular or atrial fibrillation.

I'm not certain what group you have encountered on Facebook, but I've encountered similar comments from time to time regarding other sources.

Realize that the internet is chock-full of forums and you can read claims from just about every source regarding the nature of various medical conditions, disorders, diseases and simple illnesses. The great majority of these discussions are being held by non-professionals or laypersons and their interpretations are most often not those of medical doctors.

There are indeed conditions which can produce both atrial and ventricular fibrillation, but vagus nerve-induced palpitation events are not among them. While I have limited time to respond to matters related to this forum, I am unfortunately entirely lacking time to fend off inaccuracies being generated by individuals on other forums.

I was contacted some months ago by an individual who used to visit this forum and a forum known as No More Panic. This individual inquired about starting a heart palpitations forum on Facebook. I am uncertain whether this is the same individual through which you are making reference, but she is not a medical doctor and to my knowledge and prior experience with her, is not a trained medical professional of any type. Thus any information being addressed on that forum would not be necessarily represented as accurate, regardless of source.

You are certainly free to visit and participate in any group or forum of your choice, but as my time is very limited at present I'm afraid I haven't the time to spend correcting what is being presented to you in these alternate forums.

You are in no danger. Take a breath and relax.

Best regards,

Rutheford Rane, MD (ret.)

Thank you RLR. The type of palps I was diagnosed with many years ago is "Supraventicular Ectopic Beats". These brought on major anxiety and panic attacks but then I found your forum, read your comments and cured my fear of them completely. Needless to say they disappeared! The group on facebook is just basically a bunch of people suffering with these dreadfull things and just giving each other support. I didnt bother with it until recently (just a catch up with how everyone was doing really) and thats when I came across some people saying they go into AF and that is when my fears came back. I think the obvious answer here is to remove myself from the group and take back peace of mind in your answers again.

Once again, thank you for all that you do and have yourself a fantastic christmas. God bless you xxx
