(painful) spasms below sternum, acid reflux, gass
Dec 24th, 2011, 2:45am

Dear all,

first of all I wish you a nice Christmas and a fantastic 2012

I will try to make my story not a really long one.

It began 3,5 years ago. On a early morning after my usual run I felt pain and discomfort on my chest. I went to the doctor..and they found nothing.
no abnormal EKG . The months after that, I stopped running cause when I did run I did not do this "free in my head", anxiety kicked in.
I became more and more obsessed with my heart and I felt worse and worse. After an episode of lot of discomfort on my chest I drove to the hospital and checked in . After some tests. EKG, and stress test I asked for a Astrup to check for chronic hyperventilation , and they found indeed low bloodgasses which could very well back the CHV story.
Still my anxiety remained. climbing stairs became difficult and I had a 24/7 pain and discomfort on my chest , easily heart racing by the slightest thing I did. A feeling of chronic arousal the doctor and I concluded.
years past , and from this summer I got new problems upon my other symptoms I just described.
I got more and more often painful spasms (which occur more a while after eating, or bending over or stretching my body or at evening lying down watching the TV, put pressure on my chest(muscles) keeping my arms up, etc/ and almost never when I'm walking down the street or at home.so moving straight up) just below my sternum. this spasm can be very electrical painful'"contraction like/spasm) and last only a second. While I'm obessed with my heart I often felt at the same time a skipped heart beat at my pulse (i often feel my pulse) I usually have a lot of gass and acid feeling on the same place.
the spasms freak me out , and they are quite painful sometimes.
my doctor doesnt think my heart is the problem. cause they checked my heart several times BEFORE this sensation due to my other symptoms.

sometimes they think anxiety do trigger this. But I dont believe that anymore.
I always have a sore chest and its always painful while lying on my left or right side in bed or stretching, and so on.
I belch a lot, gass a lot, and becomming more and more immobile (i'm scared to exercise..so sometimes I lay down for days)

I'm diagnozed with a hiatal diaphragmatica 17 years ago..and reflux.
In episodes I take omeprazole for it..which in my opinion never works, but my doctor insists

Could anyone give more explanation what this is/could be?
Should I worry abut this.?  Does this sound dangerous?
What could I try to do about this?

i.m allmost 40 years old, man,no smoker or drinker, a bit too heavy but not much (few pounds), and I dont exercise for years anymore cause I dont trust my symptoms

slight add on. I do often have the feeling my chest on the right side of the sternum breastbone is very tight and when I stretch there, it is painful and it gives snapping and cracking sounds. Often sore arm and between shouders and again below sternum

I must add also that no doctor ever detected my skipped heart beat. or mentioned it. So i dont know if they know they are benign. They never mentioned them even though I stated I have them

p.s the moment I experience a new symptom I'm often a bit hypochondric. for instance I recently looked at my nails and found out some of my nails are half pink and half a bit white.. now I looked it up on the net and found a lot of scary stuff..liverfailure, kidney heart, etc)

I get this spasm/pain/jolt thing just below the sternum. It's actually how I first noticed that I was having palpitations (more than 30 years ago). I'm not a doctor, but I'll lay you odds it's just a nerve firing. I ran 14 miles this morning. I had two jolts on the run. Nasty painful things. But harmless. I don't even think about them now when they happen.

thx for answering.
I´m new here and have been reading a lot of topics since yesterday.
I hope RLR will also find the time to reply.
I´m deeply amazed by the way he can explain things , and is it true he is 90 years old? wow!

I understand the explanation of anxiety. I can relate to that cause I know that I have an exercise anxiety now for 3,5 years. before that I ran 5-8 miles 4 times a week. Never had any doubt in my mind.
The last weeks before I got my symptoms I felt dizzy after every run.
I just shook that off as nothing and kept exercising.
till that day .
Since then I'm scared to do exercise. I often do NOTHING. Just a half a mile bicycle trip (speed 8 miles an hour) is good for an elevated heart pace of 150 or more. Cleaning the floor on my knees. BIG problems ..fast heart rate and pain and discomfort.

So I dont exercise anymore. dont believe its something my heart can take. So thats anxiety I know..

But the problem is no one explains to me why at a certain moment I have no problems running and suddenly it goes wrong. and since then I've gotten more and more symptoms. (was that my CHV allready..due to exercising??)

I've had a check up with my cardio. but nothing was found.
But no explanation whatsoever what is wrong. Me myself addresed the chronic hyperventilation..it was tested in mmy blood positive..but not taken as an explanation)
anxiety? ..the first time I got these sensations there was no anxiety..!!

I ve read some topics about soccerplayers etc. that they dropped dead, and before that had no problem in check ups for their heart.
Here in Europe we had a few. In the Netherlands a player survived after a couple of heart attacks (cardiac arrest) and when they examined him afterwards. cardios found nothing !!!!!????

No one really explains this..
why not explain this? Is it cause they dont know!!?? and cant say that..?
These things doesnt help me. cause I have symptoms and in my belief (yes I know what I write ..MY believe) its not ok ..
cause I've never got a real explanation..
not for my symtpoms. (only its not your heart..-> well it is my heart I do think than but its not serious I guess, but dont say it isnt my heart).. and never got an explanation for that soccerplayer who had presumably nothing..

So thats my problem.

I admire your courage to exercise.
I really think I would die doing so or make the situation worse.

But you have the same painful spasm below sternum (a spasm contraction that last a second) which feel like a shock?
Furthermore I often feel all kinds of flutter en tingling and little beats anywhere on my chest..left and right. Is that a skipped heart beat too..or can this be mucles?

thank in advance

Hey Richie

The soccer players dropping dead thing. Almost always they *do* have problems with their heart that would have been detected if they'd had the sort of tests that you have had (normally it's hypertrophic cardiomyopathy). In the States, they'll often screen teenage athletes precisely because it is possible to identify those people who are at risk.

The other thing is you can't eradicate all risk from your life. Suppose it were true that in extremely rare cases people without detectable problems in their heart drop down dead. You can't live your life on the assumption that you're going to be that person. That's like not taking the bus in case it falls into a ravine as it goes over a bridge. And you can't think - "Ah, well, I'm having these heart symptoms, therefore, I'm going to be one of these very unlucky people", because vast numbers of people have our symptoms, and overwhelmingly they live long and happy lives.

Yes, I have exactly the same spasm. It feels precisely like a short, sharp shock, and it takes my breath away. But I've been having these for years, and so far, nothing untoward has happened. Tell you what, other people on here also have the same shock sensation.

Thx !!

Reading on this forum has helped a lot.

I hope RLR will find the time to respond to my posting.

Its like I wrote. I know I have anxiety..my last finding of half white half pink nails on some of my finger nails..and looking on DR Google and find heart failurte, renal failure (kidneY) and heart failure as possible illnesses having these nails  has put my anxiety level high up.

maybe someone who has these type of nails also And know they are non specific of illnesses?
