Stomach discomfort
Sep 11th, 2007, 12:49pm

Hi,

I realise this question isn't strictly to do with ectopics, but I know that there is a significant link between ectopics, GI irritation, anxiety and the vagus nerve so I just thought I'd check it out...

For the past couple of months I have been having a really uncomfortable stomach on and off. Can be there for a few days then go again for a few days. I have suffered from heartburn and stomach acid for years and recognise those feelings, but this if more like in the high part of the stomach below the breasts (lower than the ribs) but before the tummy button (does that make sense!?!).

This feeling is like a tight lump feeling inside and feels uncomfortable after eating. If i have it I find I can't eat much after 6:30pm without it being really uncomfortable all night long - even hours later. My tummy also feels like it doesn't know if its hungry or grumbly either. I feel like I'm hungry, but when I eat, its too uncomfortable, so I stop and then feel "hungry" again minutes later!

Like I said earlier, I can go days and days without this feeling, but then I can get it and it lasts for days too. If I rub my tummy when it feels like this, I do burp which makes it feel better but only for a second, then it feels exactly the same again. Putting a hot water bottle on it also helps!!

RLR - I wondered if I should ask my GP for some Omeprazole to see if it helps as I was given this just over a year ago for acid reflux - but it doesn't real feel acidic so will it help?

Obviously the health anxiety in me tells me it must be some sort of stomach cancer or something equally as hiddeous  Shocked so as usual, reality and reassurance are always welcome!!

Thanks as always,

Symptoms of IBS can present themselves in very much the same way and typically, it's an alternating pattern. Many patients complain of epigastric pain beneath the sternum. Stress and anxiety can cause tension at the esophageal sphincter, which is the juncture between the esophagus and stomach, and makes it difficult to release trapped air. Some patients even feel that it makes them feel a bit thirsty and sense a tightness around their throat that is relieved upon eructation (belching.)

It's important to pay attention to bowel habits, ie constipation, difficult movements or diarrhea that alternate or even remain consistently troublesome in one variety or another. I would not be concerned about cancer. The symptoms are unrelenting rather than alternate between good days and bad, and just gets worse with time. You're fine in that regard.

Omeprazole and other proton pump inhibitors are designed to actually shut down many of the cells that produce gastric acid and need to be taken approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour before the morning meal and then then again at the same time prior to the supper meal or just before bedtime, depending upon symptoms. The reduction in acid can be of help in cases where hypersecretion is an issue or if IBS is present in some cases. It is a drug that is used symptomatically, meaning that it is prescribed and if symptoms improve it can be elected as a maintenance drug of choice. Personally, I think this is okay for about 10 to 12 weeks. If symptoms persist beyond this point, then it's simply a good idea to arrange a referral to a gastroenterologist to determine whether you may have a duodenal ulcer that is active, or amylase testing to see if your pancreas is acting up a bit. In any case, these conditions are very treatable and in the event they are ruled out as the cause, they can recommend excellent therapy choices for IBS, etc.

You'll be fine. Approach your primary care physician and seek their best determination for treating your symptoms and take it day at a time. Things will improve.

Best regards and Good Health

Thanks for the quick reply RLR.

I didn't realise that IBS could produce symptoms so high up in the digestive tract!

My bowel movements (sorry folks!!) are quite all over the place and have been for years. I never really get constipated as I go everyday (if not several times a day sometimes), but it can be difficult at times. I FREQUENTLY get diarrhoea - I can start off fine and then it suddenly turns into diarrhoea. I probably don't go a week without diarrhoea at some stage.

I also get a lot of mucous in the bowel, which after investigation, a biopsy and a barium meal about 10 years ago, was diagnosed as a solitary colonic ulcer. I get the mucous to varying degrees everyday.

Does the above information fit with IBS? It doesn't all fit (especially the full/lumpy feeling high up and burps) with my limited knowledge of IBS, apart from the diarrhoea part.

Thanks again
