laughing & palps-quick question RLR
May 24th, 2008, 3:33am

Hi RLR & everyone else,
just wondered if anyone else has had irregular beats triggered by laughing.
It doesn't happen every time but sometimes when talking alot (normal for me!) or laughing I get this tight, pressure feeling in my upper chest & throat & then a few palps with it, I think they're ectopics but not sure.
It just feels very unpleasant & I don't want to cut down on either of these activities, lol!!!!
Otherwise I'm learning to live with a few palps here & there & they are much reduced, anxiety much, much lower too!
Thanks in advance
Seffie xx

Sounds like I am a lot like you- i.e. I talk a lot and laugh a lot. Wink
I also get that feeling of tight chest and pressure sometimes when I laugh, but like you I am not about to cut down on the talking and the laughing. (Don't think I could, if I wanted to  Cheesy)
I've noticed it, but never worried about it, just figured it comes with the anxiety.
Anyway, thought you would like to know that you're not the only one getting that.

Same here! Whenever I'm talking and get too eager I get skipped beats or just fast heart beat.
Especially when I am about to tell something about myself, or something funny.
It doesn't scare me as I know it's down to nervousness.

Hej Hexia! Godt at se dig.  Wink

Ah, this is a simply one. Laughing stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. Remember our anatomy lesson; what role does the vagus nerve play? It's a pathway for parasympathetic nerve impulses.

Sympathetic= gas pedal
Parasympathetic=brakes

So could the inducement of laughter cause a change in vagal tone and subsequent parasympathetic nervous response, sufficient to cause a palpitation to be sensed?

You bet. It's an entirely normal physiological response.  Grin
