Please inform RLR:Heart Rate increase on inhaling
Mar 27th, 2011, 5:01pm

Hi everyone,
Just a little concern (i think). I am a sufferer of eptopics and get great reassurance in this site, at the moment they are under control. However, something i have always been aware of that hasn't concerned me, has now started to get me rattled and paranoid........When i inhale, my heart rate increases a little and then slows to the normal speed on exhaling. Is this healthy? I'm hoping RLR can assist me with this one! My sister is a cardiac nurse and tells me it isn't normal so as you can imagine every time i breathe in i am aware of it and am now beginning to feel a head rush but i think it is only due to my awareness (i hope)

Your help will be very much appreciated  Smiley

Thanks,
Kelley.

I'm sure RLR will be able to help you with this.  I am a nurse also, and my knowledge of this is that this is perfectly normal, and actually can be a sign of a healthy heart.  But, I'll let RLR confirm that.  I would not worry about this.

Okay, what you're describing is purely normal physiology. Everyone's heart rate increaes a little on inspiration and decreases on exhalation.

It does not indicate a problem of any type whatsoever. When you breath in, the gas exchange at the level of the lungs produces rich oxygen that is quickly carried by the heart out to the body and in doing so, produces a slightly elevated heart rate. When you exhale CO2, the heart decreases.

Best regards and Good Health
