Palps/afib caused by stomach/vagus issues
Aug 20th, 2012, 8:13pm

Hi,
I suffer from palpitations and episodes of afib, caused by stomach/digestive issues. I was wondering if there was any links/information that someone could pass on to me, so I can read it over? I don't know how I got it or how to get rid of it, but I've been living with it for 5 years now. I'd like to be as informed as I can so I can talk it over with a doctor. Again!. Thanks in advance. Okay, welcome to the forum and I've read your complaint. Please discuss in further detail the diagnosis of atrial fibrillation as it relates to your problem. In other words, tell me more specifically how this diagnosis was arrived at and whether your physician or specialist is basing the diagnosis on diagnostic test results.

Additionally, please describe in detail your "stomach issues," ie the main symptoms you experience, when they began and whether there is  anything which improves your condition, whether you've been directly evaluated by a gastroenterologist and are under treatment of any kind.

Best regards,

Doc's can't find anything wrong. I have a healthy, functioning heart. My afib has been triggered by bending/moving the wrong way on a full and or empty stomach. The longest afib episode I had, lasted just over 2 hours. That was before I understood how to make it end. All I have to do is burp, to "reset" my heart. I need to get the gas out of the area that triggered it in the first place. Which is just below/slightly under, my left rib and the area between the ribs/just on top of the stomach.
As far as stomach issues, I live with constant growling and gnawing. No pain. I alleviate the aggrevation by eating. Some things, like milk, do make it worse, so I try to avoid it. Its the gurgling and rolling around of the gas, that triggers my palps. Afib episodes are controllable to a certain degree. I've learned how to avoid them. But, the palps aren't as easy to control. They can have a mind of their own. I constantly feel like my insides are being pushed up into my ribs. I've read, on this forum, about the vagus nerve being irritated and in turn, can cause the palps and afib, but I feel that if I can get to the source of my stomach issues, the heart issues will go away.

Lynn,
I had to look twice and make sure that I didn't write your post! Your symptoms are ere EXACTLT like mine! I have the laft sided gas moving between the ribs. It can go on for weeks sometimes. Then invariably I feeel the flutters in the chest or back are and sometimes (but rarely) on the right side. These sensations come and go. Sometimes I can go for monts without any symptoms at all. These seem to get worse when I eat anything that contains "dairy" products, or greasy fried foods. Sometimes it seems like too many sugary snacks can be the culprit . I haven't gotten an "a fib diagnosis", as a matter of fact, I was diagnosed with benign pvc's. Once when I felt the flutters really bad, I went to the ER and had an ekg. The strip was "normal"! What they did find was dehydration and low potassium. After I got the diagnosis, a dose of liquid potassium, and increased my fluid intake the sensations subsisded. Pretty tricky! I guess , however difficult, the important thing to remember is the symptoms are "harmless" although very disturbing. Stressing over them makes them much worse.  You're in the right place because RLR has a great deal of knowledge regarding these issues. Good luck and I hope things get better for you very soon.

Indeed, the presence of GI inflammation due to abdominal distention resulting from excess air/gas can induce benign palpitations. Although you make no mention, I would suggest that you obtain a referral from your primary care physician to a gastroenterologist for the purpose for evaluation to determine the cause for your persistent GI symptoms. While stress and anxiety are mostly to blame, other conditions may be present which are treatable as well.

A reduction in GI symptoms will absolutely correspond with a commensurate reduction in the manifestation of benign palpitation events.
