My palpitations have changed. I this 'okay'?
Mar 04th, 2013, 4:08pm

Hello, all.

I have had pretty regular/frequent palpitations for the past few years now. Normally they last for a few seconds and completely take my breath away, they aren't ever a massive problem, but in the past 3 weeks they have changed.

Now when I have a palpitation I feel a very, very strong urge to cough. This has never happened before, and it feels.... odd. If feels like a significant flutter along with loss of breath. I does only last a few seconds but since it's a sudden change I thought I'd better post here for some advice.

The urge to cough as a result of palpitations of this type is simply due to the anatomical structure of the vagus nerve and the regions which the nerve innervates, one of which is the larynx and another the lungs. It's important to realize that when a wayward nerve impulse travels along the vagus nerve and reaches all of the terminal endings, it induces a corresponding response. The reason that the response is felt so dramatically at the level of the heart is due to its very dynamic nature and anatomical position within the thoracic cavity.

The sensation is not a sign of anything serious. I will also close here any simply comment about obtaining medical "advice" from the internet versus medical information. Remember that although I'm a retired physician, you should always depend upon the direct relationship and advice of your primary care physician or specialist. I make mention here only as a reminder.

You'll be fine.
