Is there anything that relieves ectopics?
Mar 13th, 2007, 11:08am

Hi there
Is there anything that makes ectopic heartbeat go away and the heart behave normally again. any remedies / therapies? It's all very well them not being dangerous but they feel so horrible it's hard not to be bothered by them. As mine happen every minute, day and night I am finding them imossible to ignore. It's like having a little baby kicking inside my chest instead of my tummy! (mums might relate to that one!)
best wishes

I really know what you're talking about, even down to the baby kicking!!  LOL.  I have heard that if you have a big cough it stops.  Having a cold drink of water and even sniffing pepper to instigate a sneeze as sneezed is supposed to 'reset' the heart.  Of course i don't really know, this is just what i have heard.  Earlier i had two long and bad runs of multiple ectopcs, took my breath, made me dizzy and scared, then i have 5 big single ectopics.  I had a big cough and they did stop.  So i don't now if that was coincidence or not! lol.x

I think you can just subdue them with diet, exercise, relaxation. They can go away on their own I think, or beta blockers can be used to alleviate them too I think if they are really bad. I am not as anxious about my heart as I was when they first appeared (2 and a half years ago), but annoyingly I can now feel them in my chest, whereas I didn't before, only in my pulse. I never really knew what people were talking about when they talked about this before - but, boy, it's a very alarming feeling, very frightening. It's certainly hard to believe there is nothing wrong with you when you get a run of them.

I can relate to the baby bit too!  Smiley

I do not think there is a remedie, but just try and relax, eat the right foods, no spices, caffine, anything that can irritate your tummy or speed up your system, sit after eating and do not eat late at night, and exercise.  Try not to stress and think plesant thoughts, when I did get on a role with all that, I did feel better, still did get missed beats but they were not as many as now!  I still had racing heart occasionally or palpitations (pounding heart) but I felt alot better in myself and could think clearer and more rationally.

Hope you feel better soon, I know how you feel

There are a number of interventions possible and you should discuss them with your primary care physician to determine what is best for you. Typically, a combination of short-term pharmacotherapy combined with professional counseling by a licensed practitioner is very effective.

Hi there
I have been on ssris for anxiety but i didn't think they were helping me especially as my ectopics began after being on the ssris. So I came off them after wondering did the ssris cause them? Probably not, as I have been off them for three months now.

Or do you mean perhaps beta blockers - I have tried for a short time but perhaps I need a bigger dose. Oh - I don't know what to do. The doctors have pretty much washed their hands of me because they think it is all anxiety, but I don't feel that anxious other than the pain the symptoms cause me.

thanks for all your time

Well look, if you've tried several avenues such as those mentioned, then maybe you should look into professional counseling by a licensed practitioner. This is important because, in reality, the problem lies in the area of emotional disorders rather than physical and that's a good thing, right?

It's also important to shop these practitioners for one that absolutely specilizes in anxiety disorders and moreover, has had plenty of experience in this area. Cognitive-based therapy can do a great deal to help you alter negative patterns that lead to increased anxiety.

If therapy needs to be combined with medication, then these folks usually have close working relationships with certain physicians who understand the mechanisms associated with these disorders and the best course to use in combination with counseling.

You'll be fine.

Thanks, RLR. I know you are right re anxiety. I am investigating therapists but so far have not really found a specialist. I feel another question coming on though which I will make as new posting.
