Allergies and palpitations
May 10th, 2011, 11:10am

I apologize if this ground has been covered but I'm a newbie.

I am a 66 year old, male, heart attack survivor who has experienced occasional palpitations for as long as I can remember. Recently my episodes have seemed to be combined with or caused by allergic symptoms like a runny nose or sneezing. My body feels like its being flooded by adrenalin.

I take beta blockers ( 150mg of Metoprolol ( sp?)) and an antihistamine ( Xyzal ) every day. I have tried nasal sprays but they seem to cause the rapid heart rate rather than help.

Neither my GP, nor my allergist, nor my cardiologist are concerned so I try not to be, but these episodes can be very uncomfortable.

Any advice would be welcome.

I would make sure that any over the counter medication you may take is ok'd by your doctor.  I would think having allergies could cause more palpitations.  If your doctor isn't concerned though, I would trust what they say and try to relax.

when I went to the ER for heart palps back in January they told me no antihistamines (among other things like decongestants/cough medicines) as they could cause them.
